Travel Journaling Course

If you’re like me, you’ve traveled to many parts of the world. I shoot hundreds of pictures, taking notes about an event or a particular place I’ve seen. I’ve always wanted to create a better memory than this. My attempts to journal my experiences fell somewhat short of what I wanted. Despite the fact that my destination was unique, I was not able to convey the moment in my writing. Journaling is an art form. It’s not merely an hour by hour list of where you walked, what you ate, or who you met. Certainly that’s a part of the memory of your travel experience, but there’s more. A well written journal can take you back to the moment.

This seminar at sea will help you unleash your potential as a travel journalist and essay writer. On sea days, Dave will offer a series of lectures and smaller hands-on workshops. He'll assign optional writing exercises based on our ports of call. Then, if you choose to share what you've written, you can have your work critiqued in class. A few of the topics Dave plans to cover include:

  • Writing about your travels with exciting and vivid detail
  • "Journaling outside the box": Unique approaches to travel journaling
  • Journaling for yourself versus journaling for others, and polishing what you write into publishable essays
  • Weaving together your "outer" and "inner" journeys, using foreign travel as a backdrop for self-discovery
  • Splashing lots of detail into your journals in a short amount of time... so you can stay caught up and still have time to enjoy your trip!

After the cruise, we plan to publish a book of travel essays by those who choose to participate. Not only will you have a wonderful time in exotic ports of call and five-star service aboard the Insignia, you will also be a published writer!

The cost for the writing seminar is $299 for the first enrollee, followed by $199 for a second enrollee sharing the cabin. This fee covers your class time, materials, and 2 copies of our published folio of collected works from the class. Additional books will be available for purchase. Classes will be limited to between 20-25 participants.

The Journaling Course costs are included in your cruise costs. If you are not interested in taking the classes, you may deduct $250 per person from the cost of the tour.
