Our Itinerary

Saturday, September 18th
Arrive in Prague.  If you’re arriving from the Croatia cruise with me, transportation will be arranged to the hotel on arrival at Prague Airport.  If you’re coming from the USA, you’re welcome to take advantage of this transportation, expected to depart at 5:00 PM for our centrally located hotel.

Most flights from the USA (Delta, American, British) will arrive late morning or early afternoon.  You’ll want to travel to the hotel, about 40 minutes by Uber at an estimated cost of $35.   We’ll meet for a welcome drink near the hotel.  Dinner is on your own this evening.  Overnight Prague

Sunday, September 19th
We’ll start the day with a walking tour of the historic center of Prague and a walk across the Charles Bridge.  You have the afternoon free for lunch, shopping, Pilsen sampling, or exploring.    We’ve got an afternoon wine tasting scheduled, followed by dinner later this evening.  Overnight Prague (BD)

Monday, September 20th
A morning tour of Prague Castle, followed by a break for lunch.  In the early afternoon, we’ll enjoy an hour-long sightseeing cruise on the Vltava River.  We’re scheduled for a 90-minute Baroque concert at the Klementinum’s fabulous Mirror Chapel.  You’re on your own for dinner this evening.  Overnight Prague (B)

Tuesday, September 21st
We depart the city of Prague just after breakfast by coach for Salzburg Austria.  We’ve got a tour and lunch scheduled and some time to explore in the beautiful town of Český Krumlov.  We’ll arrive in Salzburg in the late afternoon.  Dinner will take place near the hotel this evening.   Overnight Salzburg (BLD)

Wednesday, September 22nd
We’ll start the day with a tour of Salzburg, featuring components from the Sound of Music.  After a break for lunch, we’ll tour Hellbrunn Palace and Fountains.   Dinner is on your own this evening.  If you’re a fan of Mozart, there are many venues offering evening concerts.  When we get closer to the time, I’ll provide a listing of these concerts.  Overnight Salzburg (B)

Thursday, September 23rd
We’ll visit the picturesque town of Hallstatt in the Dachstein Mountains today for a lake cruise and a tour of the historic salt mines, which includes a funicular ride to the top of the town.  Lunch, shopping and exploration time are on your own in town.  We’ll return to Salzburg late afternoon.  Your afternoon and evening are free.  Overnight Salzburg (B)

Friday, September 24th
We’re on the way to Germany, more specifically Bavaria, today.  After breakfast, we travel by coach to Garmisch.  Before we leave Austria, we’ll detour to the town of Berchtesgaden and an opportunity to visit Kehlsteinhaus, commonly referred at the Eagles Nest.  We’ll break for lunch in the town of Berchtesgaden.  We complete our drive to the Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the mountain host of the 1936 Winter Olympics.  You’ll have free time to walk the town after our check in.  Dinner tonight is near the hotel.  Overnight Garmisch (BD)

Saturday, September 25th
Our day in the Bavarian Alps starts with a morning drive to Neuschwanstein Castle for a tour of the castle.  Next, we’ll to the base of the Gondola leading to the tallest point in Germany, Zugspitze.  We’ll spend free time on top to have a beer or hot chocolate.  It’s an amazingly scenic place.  Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.  Dinner is on your own this evening.  Overnight Garmisch (B)

Sunday, September 26th
We depart just after breakfast on our way to Augsburg, Bavaria’s third oldest city, dating back to 15 BC.  We’re staying in Augsburg as a jumping off point for Oktoberfest.  Smaller, quieter, more affordable and less chaotic than Munich.  Before we reach the city, we’ll stop at the historic Andechs Monastery and Brewery for a short tour and break for lunch on your own.  We’ll continue to Augsburg after lunch with an arrival at our hotel about 4:00 PM.  Dinner tonight is on your own.  Overnight Augsburg (B)

Monday, September 27th
Munich Day and the Main Event, Oktoberfest.  We’ll take the train from Augsburg for the hour-long trip into the center of the city.  Our local guide will take us on a walking tour of the center, followed by lunch at the storied Hofbrauhaus.  From there, we walk to Theresienwiese, the site of the sponsored tents that have hosted millions of beer lovers for over 200 years.  We’ll board our train for the short ride back to Augsburg at approximately 5:00 PM.  Farewell dinner is near the hotel this evening.  Overnight Augsburg (BLD)

Tuesday, September 28th
Two options for transportation to Munich Airport for flights home.  I would encourage you to book a late afternoon return (Lufthansa has a nonstop flight at 3:30 PM).  United, Turkish, Iceland Air all have flights departing after 2:00 PM.  I’ll have an 8:00 AM departure from the Augsburg hotel to get you there by 10:00 AM for late morning departures.  Another shuttle will take you at noon for flights departing after 3:00 PM.

Flights:

Your best bet for a carrier flying into Prague (depart 9/17, arrive 9/18) is Lufthansa.  That pairs well with the nonstop departing Munich for Seattle on September 28th.   British Airways has a schedule that works well too.  For best results, visit Kayak.com or Google Flights.  Set up a fare notification for both sites.  It’s a great place to get schedules and fares, but book directly with the airline to avoid surprises.
